“Istanbul Pedestrian Exhibitions 2: Tünel Karaköy” as an art initiative, aims to open up a platform for discussion on the transformation of Karaköy that has functioned for centuries as a port and a trade center for Istanbul, a water city, and its future identity through spatial and cultural proposals.

Sivil bir sanat girişimi olan “İstanbul Yaya Sergileri 2: Tünel – Karaköy”, mekânsal ve kültürel öneriler aracılığıyla, bir su kenti olan İstanbul’un yüzyıllarca limanı ve ticaret merkezi olarak işlev gören Karaköy’ün dönüşümü ve gelecekteki kimliği üzerine bir tartışma alanı açmayı hedefliyor.

Taking its share from the process of rebirth and transformation of cities together with the fact of globalisation Istanbul has experienced large-scale urban projects changing the anatomy of the city. Consequently, as a result of the moving of the finance sector in Karaköy to Zincirlikuyu – Maslak axis, the controversial expropriation of Perşembe Pazarı in the 1980’s and partly the moving to Perpa Trade Centre, this district has opened itself up to new forms and functions. Considering Karaköy’s geographic and strategic location in the city and its distinguished place in urban life which illustrates Istanbul’s socio-economic history and culture related to sea life, the criteria by which the district’s future will be defined is of great importance.

Küreselleşme olgusuyla birlikte, kentlerin yeniden doğuşu ve dönüşümü sürecinden payını alan İstanbul, 80’lerden bu yana, kentin anatomisini değiştiren büyük ölçekli kentsel projelere sahne oldu. Bu durumun bir uzantısı olarak, Karaköy’de bulunan finans sektörünün Zincirlikuyu-Maslak aksına taşınması, Perşembe Pazarı’nın 1980’lerdeki tartışmalı istimlakı ve kısmen Perpa Ticaret Merkezi’ne taşınması sonucunda bu bölge, kendini yeni form ve işlevlere açtı. Karaköy’ün gerek kent içindeki coğrafi ve stratejik konumu, gerekse İstanbul’un sosyo-ekonomik tarihini ve su yaşantısına ilişkin kültürünü örneklemesi açısından kent yaşantısındaki ayrıcalıklı yeri göz önüne alındığında, bu bölgenin geleceğinin hangi ölçütlere göre belirleneceği, İstanbul’un içinden geçmekte olduğu kentsel dönüşüm bağlamında büyük bir önem taşımaktadır.

The Karaköy Square, today invaded by the traffic, does not allow pedestrian movement except in the underground passages and does not act in accordance with the reason d’etre of a square as a gathering place where social encounters and activities may take place. On the other hand, in spite of Karaköy’s location facing the historic peninsula and the visual splendour it presents to the passerby in the district, the reservation of the square’s most strategic points for traffic and parking lots prevents the potential vitality that could form in the square. Putting forth the utopic idea of opening up the Karaköy Square to the use of pedestrians, “Istanbul Pedestrian Exhibitions 2” proposes the construction of the future identity of the square with a transformation based on culture and the re-organisation of the public space in favour of the pedestrian.

Günümüzde trafiğin işgal ettiği Karaköy Meydanı, alt geçitler dışında yaya hareketine izin vermemekte ve herhangi bir meydanın varlık nedeni olan sosyal karşılaşma ve etkinliklerin gerçekleşebileceği bir toplanma mekânı olma özelliği taşımamaktadır. Öte yandan Karaköy’ün tarihi yarımadayla karşılıklı konumuna ve bölgeden geçenlere sunduğu görsel zenginliğe karşın, meydanın en stratejik noktalarının trafiğe ve otoparka ayrılmış olması, meydanda oluşması muhtemel yaşantıyı engellemektedir. “İstanbul Yaya Sergileri 2”, Karaköy Meydanı’nı yaya kullanımına açan ütopik bir öneri getirerek, meydanın gelecekteki kimliğinin kültürü temel alan bir dönüşümle yapılandırılması ve kamusal alanın yayanın kullanımı lehine yeniden düzenlenmesini önermektedir.

“Istanbul Pedestrian Exhibitions 2” suggests an itinerary beginning from Istiklal Caddesi where the Main Info Centre of the exhibition is located and leading into Tünel Square, Karaköy Square, Galata Bridge, Iskele Rıhtımı and Perşembe Pazarı located at the Haliç shore. The site-specific projects within the exhibition have been created with the aim of presenting proposals towards the pedestrianization of the public space. The exhibition includes architectural and artistic interventions constructed in urban scale in addition to urban culture’s alternative tools of expression such as stickers and flyers. Furthermore, the presentations of the workshops realized by four universities about the future of the district and its current position will be located at the exhibition’s Main Info Centre.

İstanbul Yaya Sergileri 2, ana bilgi merkezi’nin bulunduğu İstiklal Caddesi’nden başlayıp, Tünel Meydanı, Karaköy Meydanı, Galata Köprüsü, Haliç kıyısında bulunan Perşembe Pazarı Parkı ve İskele Rıhtımı’nı içine alan bir yürüme rotası önermektedir. Sergide yer alan projeler, mekâna-özel olarak tasarlanmış olup, kamusal alanın yayalaşmasına yönelik öneriler getirmeyi hedeflemektedir. Sergi, kentsel ölçekte kurgulanmış mimari ve sanatsal müdahalelerin yanısıra çıkartma ve el ilanı gibi kent kültürünün alternatif ifade araçlarını da içermektedir. Ayrıca, dört üniversitenin bölgenin geleceği ve bugünkü duruşu üzerine gerçekleştirdikleri atölye çalışmalarının sunumları serginin ana bilgi merkezinde yer alacaktır.

Panel discussions, talks and guided tours will be organized throughout the exhibition. It is intended to publish a comprehensive book which will include urban, sociological, historic and cultural readings about the district together with the documentation of the exhibition.

Sergi süresince düzenlenecek panel tartışmaları, söyleşi ve rehberli turların yanı sıra bölge üzerine kentsel, sosyolojik, tarihsel ve kültürel okumaların ve serginin dokümantasyonunun yer aldığı kapsamlı bir kitabın da sergi bitiminde yayınlanması hedeflenmektedir.

Proposing to rethink the usage of public space which has lost its functionality and to create new possibilities in favour of the pedestrian, “Istanbul Pedestrian Exhibitions 2” offers a unique chance to experience and contemplate on Karaköy and at large, the city of Istanbul.
